Read Ahead at PS 287

Read Ahead’s vision is that students have the opportunity to unlock their full potential through mentoring relationships based on a love of reading.

Staying connected during distance learning!

School might be closed, but Read Ahead’s team has compiled our favorite ideas, activities, and articles at readahead.org/family-home-resources to bring support, joy, and reading into your home! We will continue to add new resources in the coming weeks, so feel free to bookmark the page and check back often.

Effective March 11, 2020, in-person Read Ahead sessions are suspended until further notice due to COVID-19 and social distancing guidance.
Families with children currently enrolled as mentees for the 2019-20 school year will be contacted by Read Ahead in early-mid April 2020 through Class Dojo or Google Classroom, with information about what Read Ahead will look like for the rest of the 2019-20 school year. All of our staff and volunteers are continuing to think about our Read Ahead mentees and the entire PS 287 school community during this difficult time—we look forward to sharing more information and connecting with you virtually while we can’t be together in person!

Please contact [email protected] if there are any questions about Read Ahead’s plans during COVID-19.

Read Ahead & PS 287 Partnership

Since 1991, Read Ahead (formerly Everybody Wins! NY) has matched volunteer mentors from premier corporate and community partners with New York City students at nearby elementary schools for one-on-one reading-based mentoring. Through the over 19,000 lunchtime reading and mentoring sessions held annually, 1,000+ students across New York City public schools develop confidence in their abilities, motivation to learn, and the skills needed to thrive in school and beyond. Read Ahead has a strong track record of success, with 99% of teachers reporting that students benefit from Read Ahead on our annual school partner survey. Learn more at readahead.org.

Read Ahead and PS 287 have been partners since 1996. Students in grades K-5 are nominated to participate by teachers or school staff, and parents or caregivers sign a permission slip to opt their children into the program, space permitting. PS 287 students are matched with mentors primarily from partner organizations including the Brooklyn Navy Yard, LIU Brooklyn, New York City College of Technology, NYU Tandon School of Engineering. Mentoring sessions typically occur at school one lunch period per week throughout the school year. Enrollment is currently open for the 2020-21 school year; please reach out if your child is interested in participating!

Read Ahead at PS 287 is coordinated and supervised by Beryl Matshiqi, Program Coordinator, who has been a Read Ahead coordinator since 2006, and at PS 287 since 2017.
